B1 is where independence really kicks in. You can follow the main points of a conversation about work, school, travel, or current events, even when it isn't perfectly simple. You'll learn to describe experiences, explain the reasoning behind an opinion, and talk about your hopes and plans without constantly translating in your head first. Grammar gets more nuanced: subordinate clauses, modal verbs in context, and the flexibility to rephrase yourself when a word won't come. Most students notice they can follow a slow video or read a simple article by this point.
Who this level is for
B1 is a key milestone — it's the level most often required for German citizenship applications, and a strong foundation for university preparation (Studienkolleg) or Ausbildung applications.
