German Comparative and Superlative: Komparativ & Superlativ

der Komparativ
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Adjective Endings first.

Comparing things in German works much like English — comparative ("more/-er") uses -er, and superlative ("most/-est") uses am + -sten. A few very common words are irregular.

Types you should know

GermanEnglish
Er ist so groß wie ich.He is as tall as me. (equal)
Sie ist größer als ich.She is taller than me. (unequal)
Memory trick: -er → -sten is the regular pattern. Three words break it and must be memorized: gut/besser/am besten, viel/mehr/am meisten, gern/lieber/am liebsten.
⚠ Common mistake: Don't say "mehr schnell" like English "more fast" — German adds -er directly: schneller, not mehr schnell.

🎯 Quick check

What is the superlative of 'gut' (good)?
