German Konjunktiv II: Polite Requests and Wishes

der Konjunktiv II
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Infinitive Clauses with zu first.

Konjunktiv II is used to be polite, to make wishes, and to talk about things that aren't real (yet). At A2 you only need a handful of extremely common forms you'll use constantly: hätte, wäre, könnte, and würde.

Types you should know

hätte
would have
wäre
would be
könnte
could / would be able to
würde + Infinitiv
would + verb, the all-purpose form

See it in action

GermanEnglish
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.I would like a coffee. (polite request)
Das wäre toll! That would be great!
Könnten Sie mir helfen?Could you help me?
Ich würde gern nach Deutschland reisen.I would like to travel to Germany.
Memory trick: When in doubt, use "würde + infinitive" — a safe, all-purpose substitute for almost any Konjunktiv II form, just like English "would".
⚠ Common mistake: Don't treat Konjunktiv II as simple past — "Ich hätte einen Hund" means "I would have a dog" (a wish), not "I had a dog".
