Many German sentences have two objects at once — a direct object (das direkte Objekt, Akkusativ) and an indirect object (das indirekte Objekt, Dativ). Knowing which is which, and the order they go in, builds much more natural sentences.
| Sentence | Indirect (Dativ) | Direct (Akkusativ) |
|---|---|---|
| Ich gebe meinem Bruder das Buch. | meinem Bruder | das Buch |
| Sie schreibt ihrer Freundin eine E-Mail. | ihrer Freundin | eine E-Mail |
If ONE object becomes a pronoun, the order can flip: pronouns usually come before nouns.
