TenseGerman termExampleMain use
Presentdas PräsensIch lerne Deutsch.now / habits / future with time word
Perfectdas PerfektIch habe Deutsch gelernt.spoken past
Simple Pastdas PräteritumIch lernte Deutsch.written past / sein, haben, modals
Past Perfectdas PlusquamperfektIch hatte Deutsch gelernt.earlier past ("had done")
Futuredas Futur IIch werde Deutsch lernen.promises / predictions / assumptions
Memory trick: Picture a timeline: Plusquamperfekt is furthest in the past, then Präteritum/Perfekt, then Präsens 'now', then Futur I ahead — each tense marks its own point relative to the others.
⚠ Common mistake: Don't think you must pick only ONE past tense for a whole story — mixing Perfekt/Präteritum with an occasional Plusquamperfekt for an earlier event is exactly how natural narration works.
