What Changes at B1? From Simple Sentences to Independent German

die Weiterentwicklung
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered A2 Review first.

A2 taught you to connect two ideas with weil, dass, and wenn. B1 is about becoming more independent: telling a whole story in order, giving reasons and results together, expressing hypothetical ideas (what you would do), and using the passive voice to describe processes. You'll also structure short opinions and emails — the beginning of truly natural German.

Types you should know

zusammenhängender Text
connected, multi-sentence text
Meinungen & Gründe
opinions with reasons
hypothetische Situationen
hypothetical situations with Konjunktiv II
das Passiv
describing processes without naming who does them

Examples

GermanEnglish
Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.I am sick. That's why I'm staying home. (B1 connector)
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen. If I had more time, I would read more. (B1 hypothetical)
Memory trick: Think of B1 as learning to 'zoom out' — instead of one fact at a time, you connect facts into reasons, stories, and opinions.
