German B1 Pronunciation — Sentence Stress & Clear Speech

You already know individual sounds and compound-word stress. B1 shifts focus to sentence-level rhythm: which word you stress can completely change what a sentence means.

Sentence stress changes meaning

German speakers stress whichever word carries the NEW or most important information — moving the stress moves the meaning.

SentenceWhat the stress showsListen
Ich habe das Buch schon GELESEN.stress on the new information (already read it)
ICH habe das Buch gelesen, nicht du.stress on 'ich' for contrast
Ich habe das BUCH gelesen, nicht die Zeitung.stress on 'Buch' for contrast

Clear speech for presentations

When giving a short presentation (a common B1 speaking task), slow down slightly and pause between ideas rather than between every word.

Ich möchte Ihnen heute mein Projekt vorstellen. Zuerst spreche ich über das Problem, danach über meine Lösung.
⚠ Common B1 mistake: Speaking in a flat, even rhythm with no stressed words at all — this makes German sound robotic and makes it harder for listeners to follow your main point.
Tip: Record yourself reading a sentence aloud, then compare it to the audio button here — matching where the stress falls is more useful than perfecting every individual sound.
