German B1 Writing Practice — das Schreiben

B1 writing tasks (like the Goethe exam) usually ask for a personal or formal email, or a short opinion post. This toolkit gives you ready-to-adapt building blocks for both.

Step 1: Starting and ending a formal email

GermanEnglish
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,Dear Sir or Madam,
Ich schreibe Ihnen bezüglich ...I am writing to you regarding ...
Ich würde mich über eine Antwort freuen.I would be glad to receive a reply.
Mit freundlichen GrüßenKind regards

Step 2: Giving your opinion in writing

GermanEnglish
Meiner Meinung nach ...In my opinion ...
Ich bin der Meinung, dass ...I am of the opinion that ...
Ein Vorteil ist ... Ein Nachteil ist ...An advantage is ... A disadvantage is ...
Zum Beispiel ...For example ...
Außerdem ... / Deshalb ... / Trotzdem ...Besides ... / Therefore ... / Nevertheless ...
Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass ...In summary, one can say that ...

Step 3: Write a short opinion forum post

Use the forum post in the B1 Reading lesson as a model. Try writing 4-5 sentences giving your own opinion on learning a language, using at least one connector (deshalb, trotzdem, außerdem) and one comparison (besser als, genauso wie).

Step 4: Write a formal complaint or request email

Tip: Before finishing, check three things: did you connect your sentences (not just list facts), did you give at least one reason for your opinion, and does your closing match the tone (formal vs personal)?
