German Connectors for Cause, Result, Contrast & Condition

Ursache, Folge, Gegensatz & Bedingung
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Futur I in Context first.

Real communication constantly connects ideas by function: explaining WHY (cause), what happened as a result, what's surprising (contrast), or under what circumstances (condition). B1 pulls together everything you know — conjunctions, connecting adverbs — into one practical reference organized by what you want to SAY, not just by grammar rule.

Types you should know

Ursache (cause)
weil, da
Folge (result)
deshalb, deswegen, daher
Gegensatz (contrast)
obwohl, trotzdem, aber, jedoch
Bedingung (condition)
wenn, falls
Zweck (purpose)
damit, um ... zu

FunctionWordExample
CauseweilIch bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
daDa ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.
ResultdeshalbIch bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
daherIch bin krank, daher bleibe ich zu Hause.
ContrastobwohlObwohl ich krank bin, gehe ich arbeiten.
trotzdemIch bin krank. Trotzdem gehe ich arbeiten.
ConditionwennWenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.
PurposedamitIch spare Geld, damit ich reisen kann.
Memory trick: "da" works exactly like "weil" but usually starts the sentence and gives background info the listener may already sense; deshalb/daher/deswegen are interchangeable results, and trotzdem is just obwohl said as two separate sentences.
⚠ Common mistake: Don't confuse "weil" (cause, verb to the end) with "deshalb" (result, verb stays second) — they often get mixed up because they can both be translated loosely as 'because/so'.
