German Pronominal Adverbs in Context: Darauf, Worüber & More

Pronominaladverbien
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Verb-Preposition Combinations first.

You met da-/wo-compounds at A2 for simple cases (darauf, worüber). Now that you know verb-preposition combinations, pronominal adverbs become genuinely useful: they let you refer back to a THING you already mentioned without repeating the whole phrase.

See it in action

GermanEnglish
Wartest du auf den Bus? – Ja, ich warte darauf. Are you waiting for the bus? – Yes, I'm waiting for it.
Worüber sprecht ihr? – Wir sprechen über die Prüfung. What are you talking about? – We're talking about the exam.
Ich interessiere mich sehr dafür.I'm very interested in it.
Wovon hängt das ab? – Es hängt vom Wetter ab.What does that depend on? – It depends on the weather.
Memory trick: If the verb-preposition combination refers to a PERSON, keep the normal preposition + pronoun (an ihn, auf sie). If it refers to a THING or IDEA, switch to the da-/wo- form (daran, darauf).
⚠ Common mistake: Don't say "Ich warte auf es" for a thing — German fuses it: "Ich warte darauf."
