German Verb-Preposition Combinations: Warten Auf, Denken An & More

Verb-Präposition-Kombinationen
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Demonstrative & More Indefinite Pronouns first.

Many German verbs are always paired with a specific preposition and case — not because of logic, but because that's simply how the verb is used. Learning these combinations as fixed units is one of the biggest steps toward sounding natural in German.

See it in action

Verb + PrepositionCaseExample
warten aufAkkusativIch warte auf den Bus.
denken anAkkusativIch denke oft an dich.
sich freuen aufAkkusativIch freue mich auf die Ferien. (future)
sich freuen überAkkusativIch freue mich über das Geschenk. (already happened)
sprechen überAkkusativWir sprechen über das Problem.
sprechen mitDativIch spreche mit meinem Chef.
abhängen vonDativDas hängt vom Wetter ab.
sich interessieren fürAkkusativIch interessiere mich für Musik.
Memory trick: sich freuen auf = looking forward to something in the FUTURE; sich freuen über = happy about something that ALREADY happened or exists. Same verb, opposite timing.
⚠ Common mistake: Don't guess the preposition from English — "to wait for" becomes "warten auf", not "warten für", since German pairs verbs with prepositions by convention, not translation.

🎯 Quick check

'Ich freue mich ___ das Geschenk, das ich gestern bekommen habe.' (already happened)
