German Adjectives After Sein: No Endings Needed

das Adjektiv
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Two-Way (Wechsel) Prepositions first.

An adjective describes a noun — "fast, friendly, big." As a beginner, the easiest place to use adjectives is right after the verb "sein" (to be), because in that position, adjectives take no ending at all.

Examples

GermanEnglish
Das Auto ist schnell. The car is fast.
Die Frau ist freundlich. The woman is friendly.
Das Haus ist groß.The house is big.
Easy rule: After "sein," always leave the adjective bare, with no ending — endings only appear when an adjective sits directly in front of a noun (a later-level topic).
