German Modal Verbs: Können, Müssen, Wollen, Dürfen, Sollen & Mögen

das Modalverb
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered The Accusative Case first.

Modal verbs express ability, necessity, desire, or permission. They change the sentence structure: the modal verb sits in position 2, and the main verb gets pushed to the very end of the sentence as a plain infinitive. German has six modal verbs, and every one of them is irregular in the singular — so let's conjugate all six properly, not just glance at them.

Types you should know

können
can / to be able to
müssen
must / to have to
wollen
to want to
dürfen
may / to be allowed to
sollen
