German Plural Nouns: Rules and Examples

der Plural
Before this lesson: make sure you've covered Articles first.

German plurals don't follow one simple rule like English "add -s". Instead there are several common patterns, and sometimes an umlaut is added too. The good news: every plural noun uses "die", no matter what its original gender was.

Types you should know

-e ending
der Tag → die Tage
-er ending
das Kind → die Kinder
-n / -en ending
die Frau → die Frauen
-s ending
das Auto → die Autos
no change (+ umlaut)
der Vater → die Väter

Examples

GermanEnglish
das Kind → die Kinderchild → children
die Frau → die Frauenwoman → women
der Vater → die Väterfather → fathers (note the umlaut)
Memory trick: There's no single rule, so learn each noun's plural form as you learn the word — most dictionaries and vocab lists show it right next to the singular.
